Use summer wisely, but don't overload it
May 12, 2008 12:00 PM
Summer is fast
approaching, and now is the time to enroll students
in summer camps and enrichment programs. Last year, I
wanted to give my children an enjoyable summer, so I
signed them up for a smorgasbord of camps and other
activities. Halfway through the summer, my children
were burned out. I am considering cutting back this
year on some of their activities, but I don’t want to
leave anything out. Sports camps give them exercise,
while musical lessons expose them to the arts. I
would also like for them to be in a reading group at
the library, and our church has several summer
activities designed for kids. With so many great
activities, how do I know which programs are best for
my kids?Read

Get child to understand, "Ownership" will follow
May 06, 2008 12:00 PM
My
daughter is a good student, but struggles with finals
every semester. Last year several of her semester
grades fell by a full letter because of poor exam
performance. I recently read your column about the
difference between learning and studying, and it
really rang true for me. It seems as if our schools
often focus on studying, instead of truly learning
the material at hand. Unfortunately, I feel my
daughter is probably merely studying for tests and
not truly learning the subject matter. There are only
a few weeks left before final exams, but is there
anything my daughter can do to make the best use of
the remaining time?Read

Keep reading on par with TV & Internet
March 25, 2008 12:00 PM
My
fifth grade son hates to read. It is that simple.
This is extremely frustrating because he has a great
memory and loves to learn by watching TV. He doesn’t
miss a program about animals, and he knows more about
history than me. On top of that, he enjoys telling
people about all of the fascinating things he has
seen on television. I encourage his learning however
I can, but I know reading is really important to his
education and future. What can I do?

Advanced math success builds off matery of basics
March 11, 2008 12:00 PM
My
fifth grade daughter has always been an average to
above average student, but recently I noticed that
she is losing points for careless errors in math. She
works through the entire problem only to get the
wrong answer because of a multiplication mistake.
While her teacher is giving her credit on her
homework, her test grades are really dropping. How
can I help my daughter stay focused on the
details? Read

Unparalyze the writing mind
February 12, 2008 03:07 PM
My
daughter is having a terrible time writing papers in
her ninth grade class. The teacher gives clear
instructions and provides a schedule detailing when
each step is due. The process is broken down into
manageable parts – the outline, note cards, first
draft, second draft, and bibliography – but in spite
of this, my daughter says she doesn’t know how to
begin.
At a young age, my daughter loved writing her own prose and poetry and reading her work to others. Now she is paralyzed. Out of desperation, I completely wrote one paper for her. She received a 66 on that assignment, and since then, she has lost all confidence in me. I admit that I am insulted – as a lawyer I write all the time for my job. Now we are both angry. What should I do?Read more...
