Disability could become long term success

I
am a patent agent and noticed early on that my
creative clients tended to fit a profile: ADD,
dyslexia, tending to be ambidextrous or left-handed,
and sleep disordered. So, I studied up on these
labels to find a correlation and realized that I was
the poster child for all of the

My
daughter will be taking her ACT for the first time in
October. She is a tenth grader and has taken geometry
but not Algebra II. She is anxious to see how she
does to determine where she should improve. She is
aiming for a scholarship. She has already been
practicing on her own and has asked to take a course
right before the test. Should she?Read

My
son is having a hard time returning to school. Last
year he was in kindergarten and had homework. This
year, his homework has increased. Now when he sees a
full page of homework, he has a meltdown thinking it
will take him forever. He now brings home a math
sheet and a reading sheet as well as spelling for
Friday tests. My son did well last year but it took a
lot of tears and agony by the entire family. What can
I do? Read

Grades don't reflect knowledge, only test questions
September 09, 2008 12:00 PM Filed in: All Levels
Every year
since fifth grade my son’s straight A report cards
have declined. Last year he was a B to C and even D
(in math) student. He has no behavior problems, pays
attention, completes his work and does his homework
before any TV or play. He always hands in his work.
He just makes poor grades on his tests. Last year his
teacher had his class bring home all graded work
every Friday to correct mistakes and hand in the
corrected papers on Tuesday. Most of his errors were
careless errors that he could correct right away once
he saw what he did. The teacher was more than willing
to re-explain if he arrived early on Tuesday
mornings. I would take him in early and he never
complained. His grades do not reflect what he knows
yet I can’t scream, yell, or punish enough to get him
to stop losing points for what he already
knows.Read

Reassess use of child labels

I
recently graduated and have my first teaching
position at a school for socio-economically and
racially diverse gifted children. It is fourth grade,
one I loved when I did my student teaching. I have
followed your column and it has helped me rethink
some of my positions about children and teaching.
What advise would you give me to be someone who can
make difference in the lives of my students?
